BetterZip 1.4 out now!

I have just uploaded the new version 1.4. After more than 3 months this is a long overdue update. It has some neat, new features, enhancements, and important bug fixes.

The new version can not only strip Mac specific files, e.g., resource forks or Finder settings, from archives, but also arbitrary files. This is particularly useful for removing all version control folders with one click. You can enter your own search patterns using regular expressions (Preferences, tab Cleaning). The patterns for the major version control systems Subversion and CVS are already included.

Extracting single files from zip archives is a lot faster in the new version, especially for larger archives. Until this new version BetterZip had to extract the whole archive in the background, even if you only wanted to view one small file. This is no longer necessary.

BetterZip will now remember your favorite archive format and use it for saving new archives. The new 1-Click-Save function can create archives in one step without asking for a filename, folder, or archive format.

BetterZip 1.4 can now open and extract DEB and RPM archives.

Last but not least, extracting archives is now a free functionality. Of course, in a limited way: You can only extract the whole archive in one step. But that should be good enough, to let other people extract archives that you created with BetterZip, e.g. AES-256 encrypted zip files which include resource forks.

For a complete list of enhancements and bug fixes, please see the version history.

Awesome update, the regex support is most excellent.

Thanks for keeping BetterZip updated! Unfortunately, the ability to import folders intact seems to be gone in 1.4.

1.3.1 could being in folders from the finder with folder structure intact.
Not 1.4, which only brings in the folder's files no matter what the preferences or archive document is set for.

It would be nice to get back the ability to import a folder intact. Thank you.

Are you accidentally in flat list mode? Try pressing ⌘2 to get back to outline view mode. Or use the view menu to switch mode. If that's not the problem, can you please send me a screenshot via e-mail illustrating the problem.

Update: It was indeed the flat view. If, at some point, you should miss your folder hierarchy in BetterZip, check the View menu to see whether you really use the Outline View.

Cody, thanks! Glad you like it.

The new cleaning feature is very nice :)
But folder Icons are now broken - it seems to be saving them okay but it gives an error when trying to extract them.

Nice update! There's only one feature left that I'd like to see added to BetterZip: being able to drag and drop individual files from one archive to another without having first to extract it.

Besides that, I'm perfectly happy with it. Thank you!

Thank you! Yes, I have cross archive copying on my todo list and you will see this in one of the next versions.

Yaaay! ;-) Nice update!

I have a problem with BetterZip when I try to zip file with name content non english character. Archive is saved but when you open it, all non english characters is not readable and files cud not be unzip!

Mike, that's bad. Fortunately, the zip files are okay. Only when you open them the character set is not recognized by BetterZip. I'll have a fix soon. In the meanwhile you can still extract these archives with Mac OS X. Or use another format like 7-zip or gzipped tar.
