cpio support not working | MacItBetter

cpio support not working

I've got the latest BetterZip and I can look in rpm archives to see the cpio.gz file, which I can view/extract to see the .cpio file, but I can't view the contents of the cpio file itself.

In order to get those contents I have to use "cpio -i -d < foo.cpio" to extract. BetterZip does not handle it (tried with src.rpm and i586.rpm files).

I'm prepared to buy BetterZip now, but can't unless this works flawlessly. I don't care about other file types so much, but examining rpm files would make my life as a Linux developer much simpler. =)

Any way this could get fixed quickly or am I doing something wrong?

FWIW, the QuickLook plugin doesn't view it either.

For extracting you need /usr/bin/cpio installed, but since you posted the exact same command, I figured you have that. However, opening the cpio file doesn't need any external programs, and you said you can't even open it.

When you drag the cpio file from the gz archive to your desktop and then open the cpio file, what does BetterZip do? Does it open an empty window? Or does it put the cpio file into an untitled archive? Or does it display an error message?

However, the title at the top of the window says "Archive Utility". Do I have the .cpio extension improperly mapped to use Archive Utility rather than Better Zip? The icon in the finder associated with it is the document with the zipper and says "CPIO" but I've noticed that some other file types that used to look similar (such as tar.bz2) now use the Better Zip icon.

Does Better Zip change some preferences to handle certain archives? Is which archives it handles automatically configurable or automatic and perhaps it missed the cpio file type?

Now it is working properly.
