Extracting files from archives with non-english named items inside...
Hallo!
1) I have a RAR archive that contains one folder with few subfolders with files. The name of root folder, subfolders and files are non-English (Russian) . The RAR archive was created using Winrar in Windows.
When I make double click on shuch folder in BetterZip 1.4.2 the Transcript Drawer holds the following information:
_______________
UNRAR 3.60 beta 6 freeware Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Alexander Roshal
Extracting from /Users/Kazak/Desktop/BetterZip1.rar
Creating /Users/Kazak/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/.BetterZipTempFolder_0016cbc9bb72/.BetterZip Temporary Folder (0016cbc9bb72) 10/папка OK
Creating /Users/Kazak/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/.BetterZipTempFolder_0016cbc9bb72/.BetterZip Temporary Folder (0016cbc9bb72) 10/папка/b2 OK
Extracting /Users/Kazak/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/.BetterZipTempFolder_0016cbc9bb72/.BetterZip Temporary Folder (0016cbc9bb72) 10/папка/b2/Test.doc OK
All OK
_______________
BUT, Finder does not open extracted folder, unlike is does when I make a double click on english named folder...
Can I ask you to fix it please...
2) I have a test RAR archive, which is incorrectrly interpreted by Betterzip:
- RAR archive contains a number of root folders with one subfolder inside each with files. The names of root folders are non-English (Russian). When I try to extract most of them Betterzip's Transcript Drawer shows "No files to extract..." message...
How to fix it?
Here is the link to the test RAR archive:

3) I also have ZIP archive (made by WinZip) contains items named in Russian. So they are displayed incorretly (different codepage???) in main Betterzip window...
What to do???

Thanks for the rar archive. It always helps in debugging to have the problematic file. Does BetterZip extract the files and only not open the folder after finishing or doesn't it extract at all?
Can I get the zip file as well, please? Filename encoding in zip files is not 100% accurate, but I'll work on that.
Concerning RAR archives with non-english named items:
- some of them are extracted in temporary folder without openning extracted folder in Finder...
- some of them are not extracted at all with "No files to extract..." message in Betterzip's Transcript Drawer...
The link to example of last group of rar archives I presented in last post (the function of attaching small size files to the posts would be very usefull).
Concerning ZIP archive:
the link to sample ZIP archive is given below

Okay, thanks! I can reproduce some problems with the rar file now. It seems that doing a 1-Click Extract works as it should, but extracting single files fails. I'll fix that with the next version.
I don't think I will enable uploading files, but you can always send problematic files by e-mail to my betterzip07 address. Or click "Get in touch" in the BetterZip help menu.
Is your E-mail betterzip07 at macitbetter ??? [RR: edited slightly]
Exactly ;) You can also use the link on the contact page.
When are you going to make a new release of Betterzip?
In about two weeks. If I have a stable version that fixes your problem sooner, I'll upload it as beta version and post the link here.
How is it going Robert?
No news yet, sorry. I am still working on this encoding problem. I have to change the way BetterZip uses unrar completely. This should not only solve the encoding problems, but enhance speed at the same time. The downside is that it is a lot of work and takes longer than anticipated.
What is the approximate date of release?
I can't say, it's really a big change internally.
Weeks, months or years?
:-)
Ah okay, weeks of course. If I can't get it out in April, I'll try to find another job. Anybody need a gardener?
April is ending..
How is it?
Oh, come on. I still have ten days. ;) I'll send you an e-mail when a new version is available, okay? This way you don't have to check the web site every day or so.
OK, understood..
How is it going Robert?
Do you need help?
Oh, hi! No thanks, it just wasn't going very fast the last weeks, but I am back on track. The good news is that the rar/encoding thing is already done. I only have to finish a few things with two other new, very neat features. I hope to have a beta out early next week.
