BetterZip 6.0.6 Brings New Features, Enhancements, and Bug Fixes
Here is the latest update to BetterZip with a couple of new features, enhancements, and bug fixes. I have also added a new collection of format definitions to the Library. For now, it offers definitions for lzip, lz4, lrzip, and dar.
Here are the details for version 6.0.6:
New Features:
- Added an option to use BetterZip with a different language than the system language. Set it in Settings > Advanced.
- Added an option to the extract presets, extraction save panel, and the AppleScript dictionary to not extract and restore macOS metadata (extended attributes, Finder labels, resource forks, etc.), e.g., for storage on Linux network drives that don’t support them.
- More configuration options for the Finder contextual menu and toolbar button.
Enhancements:
- An extracted app will be exempted from translocation when nothing else from the archive lands next to it, because sibling files are what path randomization guards against. BetterZip now mimics the behavior of a Finder move action here.
- Switching to the old icon will now also change the document icon to the old version. Since there is no API to do that, this has to modify the installed app itself, so you need the necessary permissions to do that. Note: The app will not pass through Gatekeeper in this modified state which is not a problem for daily use, but you should be aware of it. A Finder restart may be necessary to see the change.
- When extracting to devices that don’t support macOS metadata, BetterZip will fall back to extracting only the data portion of files.
- BetterZip will automatically append an extension to a filename pattern, if the pattern misses one.
- Updated the unrar library to the latest version.
- Updated the bundled zstd and brotli tools to the latest version.
- Updated the 7z helper to v 26.03 with assembler optimizations for Apple Silicon enabled. This will speed up 7z extraction about 20 %.
Bug Fixes:
- Plain bz2 archives couldn’t be extracted.
- Enabling/disabling the Finder extension in BetterZip > Settings could sometimes behave as if it were inverted, because of a timing issue.
- New macOS, new roundness: macOS 27 forces a rounder mask onto the drop areas in the drop bar which BetterZip didn’t know about yet. Fixed.
- Fixed a rare crash rooted in the communication between BetterZip and external helper tools.
- When selecting an app while the preview sidebar was opened, certain infos and the icon of the app were extracted and shown. This no longer worked in BetterZip 6, but is now restored. In addition this will now also work, if the file type “app” is configured to be previewed using Quick Look.
- Extracting a tar.gz file would extract to a folder with the tar extension appended. This no longer happens. (That was a regression in BetterZip 6.)
- The “Create an extra folder” option in the extraction presets behaves like it did in version 5 again: when a folder of that name already exists at the destination, BetterZip simply creates a new one with a number appended. That behavior got lost by accident when I created the new conflict resolution window. BetterZip started asking whether to merge into the existing folder, replace it, and so on instead. I didn’t like that, it adds complexity where none is needed. But if you preferred the new way, please do let me know!
- On Dropbox (and probably other cloud storage systems too), temp folders could remain, because Dropbox would revive them after BetterZip deleted them. As long as your main temp folder is on the system disk (which it is by default), BetterZip will use that instead of putting the temp folder next to the new archive and the problem will no longer occur.
- Pre-configured filters were invalid when reset to the “factory settings”.
- Missing rar extensions in filename patterns were misinterpreted as access permission errors.
If you find any problems, please do get in touch and report them. Thanks!
